the politics of jesus

so for about a month now i have been reading The Politics of Jesus with a bunch of friends of mine across the us, a virtual book club if you will, and i have been totally digging this read. this chapter we are in now is called 'god will fight for us'. interesting. hopefully some good stuff. well about 2 pages into the chapter i come across this: "It is a general rule of proper textual interpretation that a text should be read for what its author ment to say and what its first readers or hearers would have heard it say." now if only i were taught this in bible school....anyways i think this fundamental fact has been left out of many interpretations of scripture. this reminds me of when i first started studing jewish culture and encourages me to continue to do so.
